COURAGE HUNKE | Positions Berlin

September 9–13: Courage Hunke (*2000) draws inspiration for his work from the streets, symbols, and structures of Accra. His city becomes any city. In his words: “The city is an archive of memories”—not a static place, but a living, multi-layered text. Each work functions as a visual diary, whose pages, however, are open to others. Viewers may find themselves immersed in a personal cartography—with family photos, hand-drawn maps, and fragments of everyday life that guide them along the way.

The materials Hunke uses in this process speak just as loudly as the images themselves. His supports are not traditional canvases, but “sandwiches,” as the artist himself calls them—layered compositions made of found paper and pressed disposable plastic bags that he has collected on the streets of Accra. These surfaces serve as both a foundation and a metaphor: waste becomes memory, becomes a record. These “sandwiches” are his city—and his resistance against forgetting.

Following his first European solo exhibition at Galerie Andreae in Bonn in the summer of 2025, the gallery will present new works by the Ghanaian artist in a solo exhibition at Positions Berlin in the historic Tempelhof Airport.
