‘For me, photography is a medium of seeing. More decisive for me than the documentation of what has been is the depiction of the perception of light, space, time and movement. Time is expressed here directly in movement and the energetic power of light becomes the central motif. It is a photograph that includes the recipient as the subject of observation and moves him to an active form of reception. It is a kind of instrument of cognition in that it does not reproduce the visible, but makes it visible.’ - Gudrun Kemsa

‘Panta Rhei - Everything flows, nothing remains.’ (Heraclitus of Ephesus, c. 535 - 475 BC) describes the incessant change of all things and the constant flow of everything in the world. In her latest photographs, Gudrun Kemsa visualises these ideas, and the artist's specific ways of depicting them change our perception of the everyday. Be it urban scenes or glittering water surfaces - they glide through space and time and give the viewer an insight into the Heraclitean doctrine of a flowing world. In Gudrun Kemsa's video installations, the image motifs move past the viewer in long, flowing shots of urban space or nature. The current exhibition in the gallery includes motifs from the urban and rural surroundings of Bonn.

Gudrun Kemsa studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Karl Bobek and David Rabinowitch. She has received numerous scholarships and awards, including a Villa Massimo scholarship in Rome (1996), a project scholarship at the ZKM, Karlsruhe (1999) and Artist in Residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris (2004 and 2023). Gudrun Kemsa has been a professor of ‘Moving Images and Photography’ at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences in Krefeld since 2001. Her work has been exhibited in national and international museums, most recently at the Alexander Tutsek-Stiftung, Munich (2024); Kunsthalle Erfurt (2022), Museum Moderner Kunst Wörlen, Passau (2021); Osthaus Museum, Hagen (2020); Salzburg Museum (2019); Palazzo Albrizzi, Venice (1999); Dortmunder Kunstverein (2001) and many more.
