JOHANNES BRUS Solo Exhibition

The artist has been exploring the relationship between photography and sculpture since the late 1950s. There are often parallels to his photographic works in his sculptures and even these are created in a process that can be described as 'sculptural'. The exhibition "Johannes Brus" aims to highlight these parallels. Large and small-format photographs contrast with his concrete and bronze sculptures.

Johannes Brus studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1964 to 1971 and received numerous art prizes, such as the Villa Romana Art Prize, Florence (1979), the Defet Prize of the Deutscher Künstlerbund (1982) and the working scholarship of the Stiftung Kunstfonds, Bonn (1983). From 1986 to 2007, he held a professorship at the Braunschweig University of Art.

His photographs as well as his sculptures are represented in numerous national and international public collections such as the Collection of Contemporary Art of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf, the Kunstpalais Erlangen, the Arp Museum Bahnhof Rolandseck, Remagen, the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco and the Centre Pompidou, Paris. In 2016, the Lehmbruck Museum Duisburg and the Museum DKM showed Johannes Brus in a double exhibition "Probe zu: Tanzen für Brancusi" and "Einerlei wo außerhalb der Welt". This was followed in 2017/18 by the solo exhibition "For Your Pleasure", curated by Clément Chéroux. In 2019, his works were exhibited at the Marciana National Library on the occasion of the Venice Biennale. Currently and until March 25, 2024, the Centre Pompidou in Paris is presenting selected vintage photographs by Johannes Brus in the group exhibition "Body to Body" - a collaboration with the collection of the Musée National d'art moderne and the private collection of Marin Karmitz.

Parallel to the solo show, works by gallery artists and guest artists, including Arno Beck, Tim Berresheim, Esra Gülmen und Lucia Kempkes, will be presented.
