REGINE SCHUMANN | Jumps in Time Solo Exhibition
For over 30 years, Regine Schumann has dedicated herself as a visual artist to exploring light, color, and form, using the unique medium of fluorescent acrylic glass. The current exhibition JUMPS IN TIME at Galerie Judith Andreae showcases significant leaps in the artist’s development, offering insights into her thought processes, influences, and transformations, and how these have been translated into her art, whether immediately or subtly.
Vivid, flowing forms and, at times, large-scale acrylic glass installations envelop the space, infusing it with color and giving the architecture a new “temperature.” Color and light, composition and intensity are central elements that define Schumann’s work. In the tradition of constructive-concrete art, she has developed her own geometric language, which articulates itself in space and engages in a dynamic dialogue with light and color.
Early in her career, Regine Schumann sought a material that could convey her fascination with the relationship between light and color. Acrylic glass is particularly suited for this because it fluoresces, meaning it has the capacity to glow on its own. The artist delves deeply into the technology and industrial production of this material, collaborating directly with manufacturers to create specific surfaces. Through special pigment glazes and tints, she explores and invents new colors. In her recent works, the chromatic brilliance of the colors and the nearly flawless, smooth surfaces increasingly merge with their surroundings, often becoming more delicate and reflective, creating a unique, intimate connection with viewers.
The works in JUMPS IN TIME invite the viewer’s gaze to drift into other dimensions, establishing a link between the physical presence of the acrylic and the immateriality that emerges through the interaction with light. Schumann’s work is a continuous exploration of color, light, and their expressive potential. Whether through natural or artificial light, or even blacklight, her pieces interact with light in various ways, constantly creating new effects of color, shadow, and surface.
This quiet, open aesthetic, combined with technical perfection, creates a stark contrast in its simplicity and clarity to the chaos and turbulence of everyday life. Schumann’s works encourage reflection on personal perception and invite moments of stillness.
Regine Schumann (*1961 in Goslar) studied at the Braunschweig University of Art. She has received numerous grants and awards and has completed several public art commissions. Her works are part of many private and public collections and have been exhibited internationally in museums and galleries, including in New York, Los Angeles, Milan, Palma, Vancouver, Tokyo, and Madrid.
Regine Schumann lives and works in Cologne.
